♦ Salmaniya (close to Manama);
♦ Bahrain Defence Force - BDF (Riffa)
There are also several government Health Centres. Expats are able to use these facilities, although they cater primarily for the Bahraini community, and speaking and reading Arabic would be an advantage.
Often health insurance will be provided by the main visa holders employer, so check which hospitals (and doctors within a hospital) are covered by your policy. In Bahrain it is usual that you would visit a hospital even for a minor ailment or a general check up. Several hospitals have 24 hour clinics, and most have specialist Pediatric departments.
The maternity services in Bahrain are generally of a good quality, and many expats remain in Bahrain to give birth, rather than return 'home'.
Although some of Bahrain’s doctors and medical staff are local, the vast majority are foreign and were trained in their home countries. The attraction of Baharain for them is the same as for most other expatriates: financial reward. Owing to Bahrain’s small population and the numerous medical facilities in the private and public sectors, long waiting lists are almost unheard of. For specialised treatment, however, it’s sometimes necessary to seek medical assistance outside Bahrain, and locals who can afford it often do so.
